Make Your Website Grow

After you have spent a lot of time, energy and money on your website, do not let it go stale. A website should be changing. You should make it a goal to add new webpages to your website on a regular basis. This will keep your website fresh for your visitors and also for the search engines. If months or years go by and there have been no changes to your website, then the search engines will consider your content stale and reduce your ranking.

How can you keep your website fresh and add to it on a regular basis?

One good way to do this is with a blog. You can download a very good blog management tool at www.wordpress.org This blog is very easy to use and has a lot of ways to customize your blog and add useful Plug-ins that can make creating your blog quicker and give more value to your visitors. This is the blog management tool that I use on my website.

You can download the WordPress files and then upload them to your web hosting server. I recommend using a FTP program to do this, because there are a lot of files to transfer to your web host server. You can download a free FTP program called SmartFTP. This is what I use and I find it very user friendly and transfers files through a cache, so you can load up the files to transfer, start the transfer and then do other things while the files are being transfered.

After you set up your blog, then you need to get into the habit of posting to your blog on a regular basis. This adds content to your website, information for your visitors and helps your search engine ranking. A blog post will usually be listed on the search engine in a shorter time then a regular webpage, because the search engines love blog posts and because WordPress has a built in feature that broadcasts your blog to services that list blogs. This alone helps get your blog post seen very fast.

You can also set up WordPress to show Google AdSense ads on your blog posts. You need to get a Plug-in to do this, but this is a great way to monetize your blog. The Plug-in can be set up to automatically add Google AdSense to all new posts, so after it is set up there is nothing more for you to do. You can find several Plug-ins that will do this for you on the WordPress Extend Section. You could also search the WordPress website for Google AdSense plug-in.

You could also create new webpages yourself or add website packages created by other people. I have over 30 complete website packages available for download in my Webmaster Gold Members Area. You can join the membership through the link and start downloading these complete website packages within minutes. Here are some examples of what is available with these complete website packages:

Sports and Hunting

These websites come with all the graphics, articles, code to make the website work, and an administration area that you use to set up your Affiliate programs. The Affiliate programs include Google AdSense, Yahoo Publisher and Amazon. Due to Terms of Service you can only use Google or Yahoo, but not both. There is also a feature to add products from other Affiliate Programs manually. You can add articles, edit articles, and delete articles from the administration area. There is also a feature that adds RSS feeds from other websites, so that your content will be dynamic and will change as the RSS feed is updated.

You can set up these complete website packages as individual websites with a unique domain name for each that highlights the topic of the website. You can set up these complete website packages as subdomains of your main website, such as www.topic.mainwebsite.com You can set up these complete website packages as sub-directories of your main website, such as www.mainwebsite.com/topic/

There are a wide variety of topics covered by the packages that are available in the members area. I am sure that you will find a topic that you are interested in. Best of all I am sure your visitors will be interested in these topics!

I wish you success in all your legitimate business ventures and in your every day life too!

More On Selecting a Good Topic

In the previous post I gave some tips on how to Select a Good Topic For Your Website. Once you have narrowed your list of prospective topics and possible ways to monetize your website, then you need to do some research. You need to find out if there are people searching for the topic(s) on the Internet. There are many ways to do this and I will discuss a few in this post.

Amazon.com is a good place to start. Open up your web browser to Amazon.com and then do a search for your topic. You may be surprised by how many books there are written on the topic you have selected. See how many books are listed and also how much they are being sold for. This may give you an idea of how much competition there is already and may also give you an idea for how much to charge for your product. You may also want to do a search on a general term that is related to your topic, because this will show other related products that you may be able to promote as an affiliate. You may want to reconsider any topic that does not have any results from the search, because this indicates that there is not much of a market for that topic.

Do a Google search for your topic and see how many results are listed on Google. Look at the related websites and products. Keep a list of the related websites that may not be a direct competition, because you may be able to get links from their website, or even promote their products through an affiliate program. You can also do a Google search for forums and discussion groups that relate to your topic. Use this format for your search “topic + forum” and use the quotation marks. This will narrow your search to just forums, and you could do the same for discussion or for directory. These sites are great for links back to your website, so keep a record of these for later use. You can also post in the forums or discussion groups to see how receptive your topic is with the people that frequent the site.

eBay is another good place to check for demand of a certain product. Start in the What’s Hot Section of eBay to see what is currently selling the most on eBay. Digital information products are sold on eBay, so do not overlook this venue for selling your digital products. Another place to look for potential products to market is Want It Now, this section of eBay is often overlooked, but can be very useful to find people that want your product(s).

How can you select a good keyword or key phrase for your webpages?

There are free tools to help you, I use SEO Tools and find their tools very useful. Here is a link to their free Keyword Selection Tool. This is similar to using a search engine search. Enter a keyword or key phrase in the box and then click on Submit. You will be shown a list of related keywords and key phrases as well as some useful statistics to help you decide on the best to use for your webpage. You want to select a keyword or key phrase that gets searched between 200 and 1000 times a day, because it will be easier to get a higher ranking on a less searched keyword or key phrase.

If you get 10 visitors to your webpage and you have 10 webpages on your website, that will mean that your website had 100 visitors. If you increase the visitors to each page or if you increase the number of webpages, then you can get thousands of visitors each day to your website. So do not look down on the lower searched keywords, because even the small numbers from the search will add up when you have many webpages on your website.

The greatest tip that I can give about keyword selection is to make sure that the keyword you select is related with the main topic of your website and that your webpage gives good information about the keyword or key phrase. Luring people to your website with a bogus search will just result in a high bounce rate for your website, because people will see that your website does not relate to their search and they will leave. Give people what they want and they will come back and they may also tell others about your website too.

I wish you success in all your legitimate business ventures and in your every day life too!

Select a Good Topic For Your Website

What is a good topic for a new website?

You can create a website based on your hobby, occupation, interest, or things you like to do. The only limitation is your imagination. Chances are that if you are interested in a certain topic there are other people interested in the same topic. The main thing to consider is that you must have an interest in the topic and have some knowledge about the topic. Ask yourself some questions to build a list of topics:

  1. What are you the most passionate about?
  2. What do you spend a lot of time doing?
  3. What are you good at doing?
  4. What do other people come to you for help or information about?
  5. Do you like to travel?
  6. Do you like to take photos?
  7. Do you like to write about a certain topic?
  8. Do you like to watch movies?
  9. Do you like to read books?

Once you have made a list of topics to consider then you can do a little research to see if this topic would be one that you could use to bring visitors to your website. You want to pick a topic that you can use to make money, so you also want to decide how you can use your skill, hobby, or interest to make money. Go through your list and think of ways that you could make money with each topic.

For example if you like to travel and like to take photos, you could create a website that reviews tourist areas. You could write a review about a hotel you stayed at and post some photos of the hotel and your room, etc. Every time you travel you can take photos of the places where you stay, eat, or visit. Keep a diary to make notes of the places and things that you liked or did not like. Try to think of things that others may want to see and explain why they might want to see those things. Take a lot of photos.

How can you make money with this website? You could sell prints of the photos you took of exotic places or animals. You could compile a book from all your notes and photos and sell the book in printed form or in electronic form. You could join the Amazon Affiliate Program and post advertisements for travel books and make money if someone buys a book through the links on your website. You could join Google AdSense and post Pay Per Click ads on your website, then you would make money every time someone clicks on an ad.

By monetizing your website, you could actually make enough money to fund your trips. Your website will grow every time you take a trip. The new content will add to your website and bring new visitors who are searching for information about the places where you have been. If you build a good website and fill it with content, then you could potentially make this a full time venture and travel to more and more exotic places.

If you write the reviews and post them on your website, then you could get free accommodations at resorts and other travel destinations. The owners of such destinations would want you to stay with them and write a review about their service, etc. This is good for them because they will get advertisement through your website and also the free gifts are a tax write off for them. You could send letters to the resorts and other travel destinations and let them know about your website and that you would like to write a review for them.

This is just one hobby that I have explored as an example. I have not covered everything there is about travel and ways to monetize a travel website. As you can see the limitation is your imagination and how well you can pursue the things you imagine.

I have some complete website packages that are available in my membership area. These website packages come with everything you need to have a working website. You will need to have a web hosting account and a domain name to use these websites. The websites have a graphic header, content and a back end to administer the website and set up your affiliate information to make money with the website. There is provision for Google AdSense or Yahoo Publisher, as well as Amazon Affiliate programs.

Check out the travel related websites that are shown below to see these websites in action.

  1. Bahamas
  2. Canoeing
  3. Hong Kong
  4. Kayaking
  5. Mountain Climbing
  6. Move Overseas
  7. Sarasota, Florida
  8. Trinidad

There are over 30 complete website packages available in the membership area that are similar to the ones listed above. You can download all of these website packages and use them to create your very own websites. The King of Scripts Webmaster Gold Membership costs $37 per month and is well worth the cost. Consider the complete website packages alone, and you will see the potential to make back the money you paid and have enough to do the things you always wanted to do. There is a library of videos and electronic information products available in the members area to help you start an Internet business or to build on an existing one. There are also electronic information products with MRR, RR and PLR which you can download and sell for 100% profit.

I wish you success in all your legitimate business ventures and in your every day life too!

What is Page Ranking?

This is a ranking that is determined by the search engines and will affect your webpage position in the search results. Page ranking is mostly determined by popularity. The search engines determine your webpage popularity by how many websites link to that webpage. Another factor that affects your page ranking is the page ranking of the webpage that links to your webpage. If you get a high ranking webpage to link to your webpage, then that will increase your page ranking.

You may want to consider my article on Search Engine Optimization, because the information below will build on that article.

Anchor text is the words that are visible for a link to another webpage on your website or on another website. It is important to use your targeted keyword or key phrase in the anchor text that links to your webpage. Here is an example of anchor text for a link to a website that sells Baby toys and gifts.

Baby Toys and Gifts

You should use the targeted keyword or key phrase to link to webpages on your own website. The links should be in your navigation bar and at the bottom of the webpages. Put all main topic links in the navigation bar, and then put related webpage links in the bottom links. For example if you are selling pet supplies, you would have product categories in the navigation bar such as “Dog Supplies” or “Cat Supplies”. You may also have sub-categories such as “Dog Toys” or “Cat Toys” that may also be listed in the navigation bar. On the webpages that relate to “Dog Toys” you would have links to specific types of dog toys. Links to other webpages on your website will also affect your page ranking, so make sure you have links to every webpage that you want to have listed in the search results of the search engines.

How to Get Links From Other Websites?

The easiest way to get links from high ranking webpages is to post articles in Article Directories, Discussion Groups, and Forums that relate to the topic of your website or webpage. You can write the articles yourself or have someone else write the articles for you. There are companies that will write unique articles for you based on the keyword or key phrase that you choose. You can also buy PLR articles that you can use to post, but make sure you make changes to the article to make it unique. Posting the same article as a hundred other people will not help you.

Make sure the article targets the keyword or key phrase of the webpage that you want to link to. If allowed by the directory, group or forum, then try to put links in the body of your article that use the targeted keyword or key phrase as anchor text. If this is not allowed, then you can usually put a link in you author box or bio information. Make sure to use the anchor text. Some article directories, discussion groups and forums do not allow active links in the article or in the author information. Post one article to test if your links are active, before you post any more make sure your links are active and work. Do not waste your time and resources by posting articles on websites that do not allow active links, because your goal is to get links back to your website.

Social media is taking the Internet by storm and this can be a very easy way to get links back to your webpages from very high ranking websites. You could make a video and post it on YouTube, putting an active link in the video description that links to your website using anchor text and your targeted keyword or key phrase. YouTube videos can be viewed by millions of people, so this will also help get traffic from the people who view your video as well.

Squidoo is a social media website that will host webpage(s) for you called lens. You can embed your YouTube video on your lens as well as post articles and photos. Squidoo also uses Google AdSense and other Affiliate programs to monetize their website. If a visitor clicks on an advertisement, then you get a portion of the money, which can be paid to you or to a charity. In addition to the link you can also get traffic from visitors to your lens.

There are many other social media websites that you can post to and get links back to your webpage(s). There are also social bookmarking websites that you can use to make your article posts, videos, or other information known to other users of the social bookmarking website. Do not neglect this avenue to get traffic to your website, webpages, article posts and videos as well as getting another link for your page ranking. Be creative and you can have a high page ranking with the search engines in no time at all.

I wish you success in all your legitimate business ventures and in your every day life too!

What is Search Engine Optimization?

You have probably heard this term before or seen the abbreviation SEO, but do you know what it means? It could mean the difference between getting traffic to your website or not. Search engines are used by many people today to search the Internet to find information about a wide variety of topics. People use search engines to find products to buy and to find information about the things that concern them.

When you do a search through any of the top search engines you get results of two types. The results that are usually shown at the top of the results and often on the right side are paid advertisements called Pay Per Click or PPC. The results that are shown in the main body are called organic search results and these are what will be considered at this time.

All search results are ranked based on the relevance of the webpage to the search. When you do a search you enter a word or a group of words into the box and then click the button labeled “Search”. These are called the search terms. A single term is called a keyword and a group of terms are called a key phrase. The search engines compile a huge database of all the webpages they find on the Internet and rank the pages based on popularity and content. When you do a search you are actually search through the database that the search engine has compiled.

For example if you are looking for a dog collar, you would enter the key phrase “dog collar” in the search box and click the “Search” button. The search engine would then look through it’s database to find webpages that use the phrase dog collar on the webpage. The webpages with more uses of the key phrase are considered more relevant. Webpages with more traffic are ranked higher. Another consideration is how many other websites link to that webpage. These factors are all considered and contribute to what position a webpage will have in the search results. The search results will usually show 10 webpages per results page and you can navigate through the results to decide which page(s) you want to look at.

Most people will click on the link to the webpages that have the highest rank and are shown first. Your goal as a webmaster or an owner of a website should be to get your webpages listed in the top ten search results and #1 position is the most desired. To do this you will need to make sure that your webpages are Search Engine Optimized.

Decide on a Keyword or Key Phrase

You need to decide on a targeted keyword or key phrase for each of your webpages. The targeted keyword or key phrase should be the main topic for the webpage and be relevant to the information you have on the webpage. The targeted keyword or key phrase should also be one that people use to search for the information you have on the webpage. You can use a Keyword Suggestion Tool to help you decide on the keyword or key phrase to target.

Once you have selected the keyword or key phrase that you want to target for the webpage, then you can optimize the webpage based on that keyword or key phrase. The targeted keyword or key phrase should be in the name of the webpage, such as www.yourdomain.com/keyword.html or www.yourdomain.com/keyphrase.php This is very important and you should make every effort to follow this guideline.

The Title of the Webpage should also use the targeted keyword or keyphrase. The Title is the text that appears at the very top of your web browser when you open a webpage. The Title is part of the meta tags for your webpage and can be changed in the source code of your webpage. The title should be repeated in the body of your webpage and should have the main header (h1) tag.

The targeted keyword or key phrase should be used and repeated a few times in the body of your webpage. The number of times to repeat the targeted keyword or key phrase depends on the total number of words used on the whole webpage. This is called the keyword density and is calculated with this formula.

Number of times Keyword is Repeated / Total Number of Words X 100

Your keyword density should be between 2% and 5%. You also want to close the body of the webpage with your keyword or key phrase, so that the keyword or key phrase is in the last sentence on the webpage.

The last part to consider is the footer of your webpage. Your targeted keyword or key phrase should also be used in the footer of your webpage. The best way to do that is to add it to your copyright statement, and it would appear like this at the bottom of your webpage.

Webpage Title with Keyword or Key Phrase

Copyright © 2008 www.yourdomain.com All Rights Reserved.

This is the basics for Search Engine Optimization and these guidelines will help you to make your webpage rank higher for the targeted keyword or key phrase. There is a lot more information to consider about your page ranking with the search engines. Search Engine Optimization is only a part of the equation. My next post will consider how links affect your page ranking.

I wish you success in all your legitimate business ventures and in your every day life too!
