Internet marketing has been going on for over 10 years, but marketing has been going on for centuries. There are many similarities between the older types of marketing and Internet Marketing. The older types of marketing have used many other forms of media. The same sales strategies can be used online. The main trick is to adapt the strategies to fit the new media.

The Power Is in the List

The first thing to consider is how to market to people online? It has been proven through research that most consumers do not make a purchase the first time they see a product or service. It may take seven times or more to be exposed to a product or service before the consumer will make a purchase. It has been proven that most people will visit a website the first time and may never see it again. How can you put your product in front of their eyes seven times or more?

The biggest Internet Marketing strategy is to get the name and email address of your visitor on the first visit to your website. You may not get a second chance, so make the first impression count. Offer your visitor an ethical bribe to get them to give you their name and email address. For example on this Blog you will find an Opt-in Form on the top right side. I am offering a Free Home Study Course in exchange for your name and email address. I am adding more content to the course, but at this time there are 44 days worth of information that have been selected for you. The information will help you to design and create your own website. You will also gain valuable information about Internet Marketing. In addition the first message has a link for a special report that you can download and use for Free.

By providing information that your list can use, you can build a relationship with your list. The biggest secret to success with your list is to give them more then they expect. Over deliver with everything you do. People will appreciate your help and will be more likely to buy your product or service. Even though sales are what keep your business alive, the sale should be secondary. You will find greater success by doing this, then you will by focusing on the sale.

Build a lasting relationship with your list. People tend to make purchases from people they can trust. Who can you trust more then a friend, someone who cares about you as a person. Not just a sale. Think of it this way, if you get a person to buy one thing from you and they are not satisfied and never buy from you again, then you just lost a repeat customer. When you build a relationship and give them more then they expect, then they will come back to buy more and may bring their friends and family along too.

Targeted Traffic

You need to get people to visit your website. Just building a website will not bring people flocking to your door. This is similar to the old days before The Internet, salesmen had to go to the doors of their potential customer. They had to place advertisements in front of their eyes on billboards, store fronts, newspapers and magazines.

You need to look for where your potential customers hang out on the Internet. Find forums and discussion groups for a related topic and then place comments and posts with the link to your squeeze page. Your squeeze page will have a mini sales letter that will promote your ethical bribe and have an opt-in form. It is called an ethical bribe, but it is really an exchange. You give them information or a product in exchange for their name and email address.

You want to post a few comments and wait a little while before you post your first article or topic post. You also want to follow the rules and guidelines of the forum or discussion group. Most will not allow a blatant advertisement, so write an article about a topic related to your product(s) or service(s). Most will not allow an affiliate link or a link to your website in the body of the post, but you can put a link in your signature or author bio box.
