Starting a Home Based Business
Have you ever considered starting your own business, but just didn’t know what to do to start one? Maybe you just don’t know where to look for information. With the rising costs of everything, it is easy to see why you are considering starting your own business.
The first thing to consider is what will you sell. Do you have any skills or hobbies that you could use to make money? Do people come to you for answers or advise on certain topics that you could use to make money? The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Here are a few home business ideas to consider.
Offer Services
Do you like to work outdoors? You could consider starting a business that will allow you to work outside. You could start a lawn mowing service, and start by asking around your neighborhood for people who would like their lawn mowed. After you build up a client base, then you could buy better equipment and branch out to trimming hedges or other lawn care services.
If you like to garden, then you could start a business that plants flowers in flower beds or maintain flower beds. You could start in your own neighborhood to build your client base and then branch out. If you do good work, then you will find repeat customers and referrals. The gardens you plant will not be the only thing growing!
Do you like to work with cars? You could start a detail service and ask neighbors to bring their cars to you. Chances are that you probably have some of the cleaning supplies and equipment that you will need, because you detail your own cars. You would need a vacuum cleaner, a supply of rags, cleaning solutions, wax, and a buffer.
Arts and Crafts
You may have some artistic talents and you could pursue making products to sell. One item that really sells is scented candles. You may find that candle making is easier then you thought. Let your imagination run wild and you can think of all sorts of unique ideas that you can create and sell to others.
Another good seller is scented soaps. Making soaps in assorted shapes and sizes can be easy and even fun. You could offer a range of products with different scents. Some people like to collect scented soap or use them for decorating their bath. A common soap for this purpose is a clear glycerin soap with some flowers or other objects inside the soap. You can find out more about making soap, by doing a Google search.
You can find something that you like to do, such as knitting, crocheting, basket weaving, macrame, flower arrangements, cross stitch, cake decorating, or anything related to arts and crafts. You could make products and sell them. The main thing is to find something that you like to do and are good at doing. This will go far in helping you to succeed, because if you do not like what your are doing, then it will be hard to do it well.
Follow The Law
Make sure you follow the legal requirements for businesses in your area. I can not list all of the requirements for every area of the world. I am familiar with the requirements in my area and I will share these with you for reference, but you really need to check the laws in your own area.
Make life simple for yourself and get a separate bank account for your business. This will help you to keep your business finances straight. Keep track of all purchases you make as well as all of the sales you get.
Once you have selected a product to sell, then you need to decide what to name your business. It is a good idea to name the business similar to the type of product or service you intend to sell. After you select a name then you may be required to register the company name in order to do business in your area. You may need to get a business license, and/or other types of professional licenses in order to do business in your area.
You may also need to get a tax stamp and be required to collect sales tax on all purchases. The sales tax needs to be kept separate from your other business income, because you may be required to submit the sales tax to your state or local government on a monthly basis. If you keep the sales tax with the other money, then it might be spent and then you will have problems when the sales tax is due.
Businesses and business owners are subject to different taxes then someone who works for another person or company. You will need to check the tax laws in your area to make sure you are in compliance. In the USA there are Federal Taxes that are collected by the IRS and you can find out more about the types of taxes for businesses on the IRS website. There is usually State Taxes that are collected by each state in the USA and you can find out more information about the State Taxes by doing a Google search for your state. There may also be taxes owed to your local government that are collected by the city, town, or jurisdiction. You may not find more information about local taxes online, but may have to visit the main offices for the local government.
You may be able to find out information unique to your area by doing a Google search for “starting a business in *****”. (Put in your area in place of the *****.) In most areas of the world ignorance of the law is not an excuse, so make sure you understand all of the requirements, laws and regulations. You may need to consult with a lawyer that understands business law in your area. You may also need to consult with an accountant or someone that prepares tax forms in your area that understand the tax requirements for businesses.
I wish you success in all your legitimate business ventures and in your every day life too!
Sincerely,
Jim Van Dyke
