Once Your Website is Working, Now What?
Today is the anniversary of a tragic event that occurred in the USA. Most people focus on the twin towers, but there were two other airplanes that were high jacked and crashed. Of course the twin towers was the most lost lives. There are tragic events happening all over the world in an ever escalating scale. There are severe weather tragedies, killer waves, and other so called natural disasters. The worst tragedies are the ones that are directly caused by humans against other humans. I am sure you hear enough about these terrible things on the news, so on with today’s post.
Some people believe that all they need to do is design, create and publish a website and people will automatically come to their website. There are many millions of websites being added to the world wide web every day. If you do not put up a sign post or promote your website in some other way, then how can you expect people to notice your website?
Think about a physical store, which is often called a brick and mortar because that is the material used to build most stores. A person tries to build their store in a high traffic area, perhaps on a busy highway. This way they can pull people into their store from the busy highway as they pass along. They may put up a few billboards before their store and then have a big sign right at their store to let people know about the store and what they offer. They may advertise in the local newspaper, on the local television or radio stations. This way people know about their store, what they sell and where the store is located.
There is very little difference with an online store. You build your store on the busy information highway and try to pull in the people that are on that highway. There are a number of ways to bring people to your website. Some of these ways are free, while other ways can cost a lot of money. It is best to use a number of methods and not just rely on one method, because your traffic could disappear very quickly if that method no longer works for you.
Search Engine
A search engine works in the same way as a telephone directory. If you are looking for something you turn to the directory and look at the pages that contain the information you are looking for. If you need a plumber, then you start by looking under the letter P in the directory and search until you find plumber. With a search engine it is much quicker and easier. You would just enter the word plumber in the search box and then click search. Of course online you may also need to include your location in the search to narrow down the results to just the plumbers in your area.
Similar to the telephone directory you can get a free listing and a paid listing with the search engines. Most search engines allow you to submit your website address to have it included in their database. Some search engines have a Pay Per Click (also called PPC) advertisement option that you can pay to have your advertisement shown on the search results page. The Pay Per Click ads are usually shown at the very top and on the right side of the search results page. The Pay Per Click ads are labeled Sponsored Links or a similar label to let you know that these are the paid advertisements. Pay Per Click is an expensive option, but it can be effective if done correctly.
Both of these methods require you to have your website and webpages Search Engine Friendly (SEF) and Search Engine Optimized (SEO). If your website is not set up properly, then you will be ranked very low in the search results. You want to try to get the top listing for certain keywords and key phrases that pertain to your product or service. Being listed on the below the top ten means that your website may not be seen. With Pay Per Click you may pay a higher price per click if you have not set up your webpages properly.
