I hope that you are having a great day today. In my area of the US we are starting to get some cooler weather. A large cold front is making its way here from the North Central states. I personally do not like cold weather and I am not looking forward to the lower temperatures. Depending on where you live, you may be seeing the fall colors as the leaves loose their green colors. Some may have experienced that already and the leaves are falling or are already gone.

When the cooler weather comes, it is a good time to stay inside. You may be thinking about making your own website. This would be a good time to do it! You may have to pull yourself away from the new episode of your favorite TV show, because most of the TV series have started a new season.

With the economic uncertainties and the higher costs of everything, you may be thinking about how to make extra money. A website is a great way to make money. Once you set up your website, then your visitors can place orders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and even while you are doing other things.

You need to decide what you want to do with your website. If you want to make money, then you need to decide how? There are many different types of websites, and there are many ways to make money with your website. Before you start making your website you need to decide what it will be about and how you will make money with it.

Website Hosting

You will need to consider which company to use for your website hosting. There are options that range from free to hundreds of dollars per month. If you are just starting out, then probably want to consider the lower end options. These are cheaper, but they should be adequate for your needs to start. Once you get your website established and have 1000′s of visitors each day, then you may want to upgrade to a dedicated server.

I recommend two website hosting companies that I have used and have had good service with. IX Web Hosting and Site 5 Web Hosting. You can use any web hosting company that you choose and can find more options by doing a Google search for “web hosting”.

Pick Your Domain Name

You may want to take the time to pick a good domain name. Your domain name is the URL address for your website. In case you are not sure what a domain name is, it looks like this:

www.your-domain-name.com

Your domain name should be memorable, so that your visitor can remember how to get back to your website when they want to return. It should also be short as possible. If you do any offline marketing, then you want people to come to your website. If your address is 40 characters long, they may not want to type it out to get to your website.

Another consideration is the use of dash ( – ) or underscore ( _ ). These may make your website address easier to read and understand, but most people are lazy. They may enter your website address without the dash or underscore and end up on someone else’s website. One way to prevent this is to get every varience of your website domain and have them point to your website. Only use one actual website address for your website and the other addresses will point to that one.

Make Your Website

Most website hosting companies provide website creation software as part of your C-Panel of control panel. This is a basic website design package. They may have a number of ready made templates for you to choose from. When you click on the Publish Button, then your website will be saved to your server and be active for your visitors to see.

Another option is to get software loaded on your personal computer to create your website. There are many options available that range from free to $100′s or even $1000′s. There are complete suites of software that cover every aspect of website creation, such as Adobe Creative Suite 4. Here is a review of the Best Windows HTML Editors. You could also pay someone to design and create your website for you. This will be the most costly. I recommend that you at least try to create your own website to start. This way you will better understand what is involved and will be able to make sure the person you outsource your projects to in the future is doing what they are supposed to be doing. There are also security issues with allowing someone else to have access to your website hosting account and other sensitive information.

What is holding you back from having your own website? Most people have a limited understanding of HTML or PHP. Is this what is holding you back?

There are ways to create your own website without having to learn HTML, PHP, or any other scripting language. Most web hosting companies provide an HTML editor as part of your hosting package. You can usually access the HTML editor through your back end or C-Panel. This is typically a What You See Is What You Get or WYSIWYG type of editor. This type of editor is simple to use and is set up similar to MS Word and other windows based programs. There are menus and function buttons that enable you to change the fonts, change the colors, add images, create hyper links, and other common function that you would need to create your web page.

There may be limitations with the provided editor. For example there may be a limited number of templates to choose from. There may be limitations for adding header graphics or other customizations. Another option would be to use an editor on your personal computer and then upload the files to your web host server.

Free Options

There are a few free options that will do many of the functions that you need to create your website. One option is called KompoZer and is based on the NVU HTML editor. NVU is no longer supported. KompoZer added a few features to NVU and has a support forum. The user interface is easy to use and if you have used any windows based programs, then you should be able to use this program with ease. This is a WYSIWYG type of editor. This is an Open Source program and is free to use.

As you create your webpage in the editor, the HTML code is automatically written for your website. I often use my editor to create the code for hyper links that I add to my articles and other content which I submit to other websites. This makes it so much easier then writing the script each time. You type the text and highlight the just the part you want to be a link. Click on the “Insert Link” button and copy and paste your URL in the editing window. I usually check the box to make the link open in a new window. Then I go to the Source tab and copy the code and paste where I need it.

Paid Options

You could buy a website authoring program. The prices range from $20 – $400 or more. Some are easier to use. Some have more features then you may ever use. It is always a good idea to compare the features and try to get the best fit for you for the least amount of money. Unless you have a lot of money to spend, then you may not even consider the higher end programs. Here is a link to the Wikipedia article, Comparison of HTML Editors.

Of course some may consider the best option is to pay someone else to create your website. This may seem like the best fit for you, but consider the security risk. How do you know if the person that you trust to create your website is not making money from your website? The programmer could insert their own Affiliate links instead of yours. The programmer could set up leaching scripts to extract your customer information for their own purposes.

I believe that each person should learn enough about their website to be able to check for proper Affiliate Links. You should also be able to set up FTP accounts with limitations to just the directories needed for your programmer to add the scripts to get the job done. Old accounts should be deleted or at least change the passwords to protect your website after the work is done. You should be able to create and modify email accounts on your web host server. These are just the minimum requirements.

There are many reasons to have your own website, but the most common reason these days is to make money. This may be the reason that you want to have your own website. Regardless of your reasons, it is not as hard as you may think to get your own website.

Website Hosting Account

In order to have a website you need to start a web hosting account. There are many companies that offer this service. One company that I personally use and recommend is IX Web Hosting. This company offers web hosting accounts for as little as $4.95/month which includes one free Domain Name Registration. You can check out the packages that are offered on their website.

Another company that I use and recommend is Site 5 Web Hosting. This company offers web hosting accounts for as little as $4.67/month. You can check out the packages that are offered on their website.

You could also do a Google search for “web host” or “web hosting” to find other companies. You can compare features to find the best package that will allow for expansion of your website. Try to get a package that offers 1 GB (Giga Byte) or more of disk space on the server, and 1 TB (Tera Byte) or more of data transfer per month (also called Bandwidth).

Domain Name

Some web host accounts will include a domain name registration. This means that you do not have to pay extra for your domain name. Domain names need to be re-newed every year. Having a good domain name is crucial for success online. It is best to pick a domain name that relates to your product or your company.

You can register your domain name(s) through a third party company. This is good for transferring a domain name from one web host company to another. If you plan on switching companies, then this may be the way to go. One company is Go Daddy.

Website Content

In order to have a website you must have content. Content is the information that is displayed on each webpage. Having good content on your website can help you get visitors to your website, because when a person comes to your website and sees the good content they will share your website address with other people.

You can write the content for your website yourself, you can hire other people to write your content, you could purchase Private Label Rights products to add content to your website, or you could have other people contribute information for your website.

There is a common belief among new people on the Internet that if you build a website, then people will just flock to it. This is not always the case. Sometimes it requires some work to get people to come to your website. It also takes some time and patience.

The search engines can be a great source of traffic to your website. Once you have your website online and functional, then you need to submit your website address or URL to the search engines. Submit your URL to the top three search engines; Google, MSN and Yahoo. You can also submit your URL to Alexa and DMOZ to make sure you get listed with the most search engines possible. It is not necessary to submit to every search engine out there. Other search engines will use one of the above sources to gather information for their search results.

It will take up to a month before you get listed on the search engines using the above links. You can help this along by providing a Sitemap for the search engines to use when they crawl your website. The design of your website and the navigational links between webpages will also help the search engines to crawl your website.

The routines called “Spiders”, used to crawl a website are complex. The “Spider” will look at the code for your website and add certain key information from your website into the database for the search engine. The “Spider” will count the number of times words and phrases are repeated on each webpage. The more times a word or phrase are repeated shows the relevance of the word of phrase to your webpage. The “Spider” also checks every link that it encounters and looks at the webpage that is linked.

How Can You Get Listed Faster?

You can get listed with the search engines faster by getting a link to your webpage from a high traffic website. This can be done by submitting articles to Article Directories that have a high page rank with Google. You can also post comments or articles in Forums that have a high page rank with Google. Make sure you use a signature with your link to the webpage you want to get listed faster. The search engines will crawl a high traffic website more often, especially if new content is being added to the website on a regular basis.

Once the “Spider” comes across your link, then your website will get crawled starting with the webpage you link to. Make sure you have links from that webpage to at least your home page. Make sure your home page links to all parts of your website that you want listed with the search engines.
